    The Sacred Art Museum

    Built in the beginning of the Sec. XVI and established on 1955, this magnificent museum is composed by several collections of paintings, goldsmithery, sculpture, Portuguese art and vestments.

     

    These pieces were gathered of churches, chapels of the Diocese and someone donated by individuals. But, due the Flemish art that it assumes a great importance, being intimately associate to the time of the Island marked by the elevated production of sugar cane, and is due to the intense commercial contacts established with Flanders that the Island of the Madeira acquires these works of art.

    All exhibited works are originals. We stress the Descent from the Cross and the Adoration of the Magi. These panels Flemings impressed not only by its artistic value, but also to their size.

    The museum of Religious Art is considered the most important museum of the Autonomous Region of the Madeira, for the variety in his works and also for the quality level of the temporary exhibitions.

    The museum of Religious Art is located in the Funchal, in the old Episcopal Palace, between the Rua do Bispo and Praça do Municipio

    Of Tuesday on Saturday

    10h-12.30h and of 14.30h-18h

    On Sundays of 10h-13h

    Shut in to Mondays, Sundays in the afternoon and Bank Holidays

    Normal ticket - 3 Euros

    Ticket of Groups (minimum of 8) - 2,5 Euros

    Senior citizens and youth card holders 1.50 Euros
    Free every days for duly identified teachers, students, members of APOM, ICOM, other Museum associations, journalists and tourism professionals.
