Joao Goncalves Zarco and Tristan "islands" landed in the beautiful beach of Machico. Gave thereby beginning of the glorious epic of the Portuguese discoveries. Here, the first Mass was celebrated in Madeira, by Franciscan priests, on the day of visitation of Santa Isabel (July 2) that accompanied the expedition, as gratitude and delight of discovery.
Many hypotheses have been raised about the origin of the name of Keene. The best known, and no less controversial, is the romantic legend of the failed British lovers Robert and Anne d'Machim Arfet. The name of this town seems that the word derives from corruptela Machim.
